Assignment # 4 Cont.
After steady research and much contemplation, I still felt unsure about how I could create something that would be able to connect these girls to each other. The one idea that I did find interesting was the tamagotchi. I had been playing around with idea of having the girls mailing things to each other. I wanted this because I realize that internet connection is limited in Madagascar, not meaning that they can't get it but alot of people still don't have it. I was originally going off that assumption. After researching that as well I realize that my assumption was indeed correct. So offering some other alternative way to communicate I think is important so that all children can take part in the fun.
MY IDEA
Each child would be given a tamagotchi which they would send to a respective pen pal. If they are in Madagascar they will sent it to a girl in the United States and if they are in the United States they will send it to a girl in Madagascar.
These Tamagotchi's would be very similar to the originals which would mean the child having to take care of a virtual pet, feed it, praise it, play games and so on. The only difference would be that these tamagotchi's would also be able to connect to other tamagotchi's around the world. Tamagotchi's already allow you to connect to other tamagotchi's that are close by I believe by pointing to the other one to send info.
At first I didn't believe my idea would be possible, but after thinking about it I am sure it would be possible since the same technology is used in a psp or a nintendo ds to play with other players that have a handheld system and they don't have to be in the same room as you.
I think this is an important feature so pen pals can send each other things for their virtual pet even if they are countries away, as well as possibly playing little mini games with each other. Preferably, I would want a password system set up so that other then each child respective classmates, they would only be playing with their penpal from another country. This would prevent from unwanted and unknown companion seekers. I think this project will be valuable to help encourage madagascar children to go to school because they will be trying to take care of a friends pet not their own. So prehaps it would give them a drive to do their best, as well as get to know their penpal more. Students will be encourage to talk about more then just the tamagotchi, so if a madagascar student is out of school they will have less things to share in common with their penpal.
At school each student will have a period everyday or every week to write a letter telling their friend of the process of the pet and whatever else they decide to talk about. Each little girl has a big sister (and older student who helps them) these girls would then be given materials to help translate the letters to their little sisters, since there is a language barrier, as well as help them write new letters back.
Lastly, to prevent children from focusing too much on the tamagotchi and not enough on school, tamagotchi's will have to be put on pause during the school day and will only be allowed on during lunch time, and recess, and possibly during the period they are writing to their pen pals.
