Assignment #3

For assignment # 3 we went to the exhibition called Networked Nature at Foxy Productions in Manhattan. We then had to choose one of the pieces in the show that we thought could have been done better, and show how we could or would make it better.

We have to submit

  • A paper discussing how we would make it better
  • Provide 1-2 sketches of our idea
The piece I chose from the exhibition was SHIH CHIEH HUANG's Din-Don

An installation inspired by everyday household electronic devices, he tries to an create artificial organic environment. The piece comes to life with an implementation of a circulation system of water, electricity, and air. This piece was designed specificially for the site it was displayed in. It hangs in the center of the gallery, where it deflates and inflates causing its "tentacles" to flap up and down, like a sea creature composed of low-tech gadgets.

Things that I liked about it

  • Electronics forming an organic piece
  • lights
  • hanging piece
  • couldn't understand how it was made

Things that I didn't like

  • The flapping of the plastic arms
  • didn't feel organic enough
  • didn't like the fact the you saw so many adapters
  • choice for materials for inflation was not organic
  • arms to long
Precedents

Ideas

  • Octopus
  • How to make household products concept more clear
  • movement more fluid
  • more attractive to look at
  • change material use
  • sound incorporated
