Assignment # 6 Major project: Group!!!

BECKY KYLE AND JOY!!!!!

Here are the idea for our project in pdf form.

Also here are some links for precedents

ELIZA
BARBIE LIBERATION

Interesting Quote!

".....the 1993 Barbie Liberation Organization, in which the BLO bought three hundred talking Barbies and G.I. Joes and switched their voice boxes. On Christmas day, youngsters found their Barbies saying "Dead men don't tell lies," and their G.I. Joe's confessing, "I love to shop!" If the goal of art is to reach the viewer in such as way as to prompt new thoughts and initiate change, then this type of interventionist performance is perhaps the most effective art form currently in use. Most art "sits on its ass in a gallery" and preaches to the converted, whereas the Yes Men present their work to the general public where political art is most needed. This type of art is like an interactive form of graffiti."

Assignment #5

This assignment required us to make 2 self portraits of people we know.

  • The first self portrait had to be in a 500 x 500 background using a 20 X 20 black square. You could animate this square anyway you like but you can't change the size or shape or color, you could only change the color in grayscale.
  • The Second Self portrait had to be in a 500 X 500 background using a 20 X 20 black square. This time you had to create some interaction with that square. You could again change the color only along the grayscale, and could move it anyway you like, also you could change the shape.
Both self portraits were done in flash and can be found here.

Assignment # 4 Cont.

After steady research and much contemplation, I still felt unsure about how I could create something that would be able to connect these girls to each other. The one idea that I did find interesting was the tamagotchi. I had been playing around with idea of having the girls mailing things to each other. I wanted this because I realize that internet connection is limited in Madagascar, not meaning that they can't get it but alot of people still don't have it. I was originally going off that assumption. After researching that as well I realize that my assumption was indeed correct. So offering some other alternative way to communicate I think is important so that all children can take part in the fun.

MY IDEA

Each child would be given a tamagotchi which they would send to a respective pen pal. If they are in Madagascar they will sent it to a girl in the United States and if they are in the United States they will send it to a girl in Madagascar.

These Tamagotchi's would be very similar to the originals which would mean the child having to take care of a virtual pet, feed it, praise it, play games and so on. The only difference would be that these tamagotchi's would also be able to connect to other tamagotchi's around the world. Tamagotchi's already allow you to connect to other tamagotchi's that are close by I believe by pointing to the other one to send info.

At first I didn't believe my idea would be possible, but after thinking about it I am sure it would be possible since the same technology is used in a psp or a nintendo ds to play with other players that have a handheld system and they don't have to be in the same room as you.

I think this is an important feature so pen pals can send each other things for their virtual pet even if they are countries away, as well as possibly playing little mini games with each other. Preferably, I would want a password system set up so that other then each child respective classmates, they would only be playing with their penpal from another country. This would prevent from unwanted and unknown companion seekers. I think this project will be valuable to help encourage madagascar children to go to school because they will be trying to take care of a friends pet not their own. So prehaps it would give them a drive to do their best, as well as get to know their penpal more. Students will be encourage to talk about more then just the tamagotchi, so if a madagascar student is out of school they will have less things to share in common with their penpal.

At school each student will have a period everyday or every week to write a letter telling their friend of the process of the pet and whatever else they decide to talk about. Each little girl has a big sister (and older student who helps them) these girls would then be given materials to help translate the letters to their little sisters, since there is a language barrier, as well as help them write new letters back.

Lastly, to prevent children from focusing too much on the tamagotchi and not enough on school, tamagotchi's will have to be put on pause during the school day and will only be allowed on during lunch time, and recess, and possibly during the period they are writing to their pen pals.

Assignment # 4

Create a toy or game that connects children in a first world country with children in a third world country.

I decided to work with connecting children in Madagascar ages 11-13 with children in United states ages 11-13.

I read 2 interesting articles so far on children in Madagascar that helped me develop some ideas.

Research

Education in Madagascar

“We were never allowed to talk in class or look at our classmates, but this year, everything is different.” explains Normella. “First of all, we no longer sit in rows, but in a ‘U’ shape so that we can see each other. Then, in the afternoon, our teacher divides us into groups so that we can discuss the day’s homework.

“I like this method because it is often easier to understand what your schoolmate is saying, rather than your teacher,” she concludes.

Peer to Peer in Madagascar

“In the morning, after getting ready, I go to fetch Nadia,” she says. “I wash her feet, I brush her hair, and I check her bag to see that she has everything she needs. And then we leave for school and I hold her hand.

“When we get to school, all the classes are already lined up. So I put Nadia with her class and I go to my class’s line.”

My thoughts

From these two articles I learned that Madagascar has high drop out rates. UNICEF came in and introduced a compotency based learning system, in 2003 which has been helping to increase children interest in school. Madagascar is one of the countries that has the highest repetition and drop-out rates. Also I learned that UNICEF introduced a big sister program which encourages older girls to become sisters to younger girls to help them stay in school. It seems that more girls drop out of school then boys and particularly it is hard for them to get past the 1st grade.

These findings are very distrubing living in the united states these things are not talked about so it was sad to discover the lack of will in children to go to school. Also the fact that they drop out of school at such an young age especially little girls. Dropping out of school in any grade level is unacceptable, but in the 1st grade it is totally unacceptable. It represents a total failure of the system and not just the third world but the first world countries as well. Our focus should be less on war and more on educating and helping the world in important matters like these.

For my project I want to find a way to connect Madagascar girls with United states girls. Ages 6-11. I changed the age range because I think it was a good idea for older peers to encourage younger peers. I want my project to show these girls that learning is fun and at such a ripe age that is what it should be about having fun but at the same time learning. Hopefully I want to design an idea where united states children can be an encouragement to Madagacar children and drive them to stay in school because of the relationships they establish with these girls as well as the fun they are having learning and sharing with them.

Extra Info

  • People in Madagacar speak french or their native langauage Malagasy
  • They wear european styled clothes and dye their hair.
  • They sell their music on the internet to different countries
  • 75% of population are farmers their chief crop is rice
  • Child development age 6-8
  • Internet usage in Africa

Ideas

  • Game played by mail
  • Sending each other fairy tales of their country
  • Mail piece of something that eventually would create a bigger object
  • Prehaps fairy tales will be written in each native country language, each native country girl would be in an big sister program. The big sisters would be given the materials neccessary to translate the story to their little sister.
  • Make a bear or plushie toy with sound to send to each other
  • Each child gets a tamagotchi and sends to other child to take care of. Writes each other reports about the tamagotchi and gets big sister to translate them.

Assignment # 3 Cont.

Here is the redesign for the project. The idea stems from designing this piece around the concept of the octopus.

The new piece would use softer fabric which could be backlit and also inflated. The installation would be in a dimly lit room. Also the mechanics of the piece would be moved to the top to represent the brain of the object. The piece would then draw in water when the arms deflate to the water bottles located at the brain, and expel water to the center of the belly when it inflates.

Octopus

Is Huang's piece based on an octopus???

Assignment #3

For assignment # 3 we went to the exhibition called Networked Nature at Foxy Productions in Manhattan. We then had to choose one of the pieces in the show that we thought could have been done better, and show how we could or would make it better.

We have to submit

  • A paper discussing how we would make it better
  • Provide 1-2 sketches of our idea
The piece I chose from the exhibition was SHIH CHIEH HUANG's Din-Don

An installation inspired by everyday household electronic devices, he tries to an create artificial organic environment. The piece comes to life with an implementation of a circulation system of water, electricity, and air. This piece was designed specificially for the site it was displayed in. It hangs in the center of the gallery, where it deflates and inflates causing its "tentacles" to flap up and down, like a sea creature composed of low-tech gadgets.

Things that I liked about it

  • Electronics forming an organic piece
  • lights
  • hanging piece
  • couldn't understand how it was made

Things that I didn't like

  • The flapping of the plastic arms
  • didn't feel organic enough
  • didn't like the fact the you saw so many adapters
  • choice for materials for inflation was not organic
  • arms to long
